As a wedding stationery designer, I’m going to tell you a secret. That creative wedding invitation idea you have is going to be one of your favorite details from your wedding. It will be the thing your guests obsess over long before the day itself comes. It will be the thing you can hold onto after the day has passed. And it will be one of the most fun aspects of wedding planning. 

How do I know? 

I’ve been designing out-of-the-box, creative wedding invitations for years. And every time, it turns out to be one of the coolest, most unique details of the wedding. This blog is going to do a deep-dive into my favorite wedding invitations, why they worked, and hopefully inspire you as you start brainstorming your own stationery! 

Some of My Favorite Creative Wedding Invitations 

I hope you understand how difficult this blog is to write, because all of the wedding stationery I design is creative, personal, and sometimes plain weird (in the best way). That’s because stationery is designed around the couple. Whatever they like, the quirks, the details, all make it into the design in some form or another. Even if a design looks simple, there’s a good chance it was incredibly complex to design. 

Laguna Beach Destination Wedding Stationery 

That was certainly the case for Kris and Dwayne’s invitations to their Laguna Beach destination wedding. Despite looking simple, their invitations went through the printing press 30 times! This suite included letterpress, die cuts, embossing, foil, stamping, and duplexing. And you know what? It was all worth it. Their invitations perfectly captured who they are as a couple, their love for Laguna Beach, and let their guests know exactly what to expect from their celebration (aka, a bold, colorful, fun party!). The colors and textures worked together perfectly, which is why it looks so “simple.” 

Modern & Abstract Stationery for a Washington D.C. Wedding 

Another one of my favorite creative wedding invitations came from Maddie and Corey’s Washington, D.C. wedding. Maddie was inspired by the gift wrap I designed for my wholesale products. She saw the brushstroke texture and immediately fell in love. But we knew we needed it to match the bold and modern theme of her wedding. So we added the gunmetal brush strokes, modern calligraphy, and pearl-stamped vellum. Each element and texture felt unexpected, but worked together flawlessly. Their invitations captured the abstract modern atmosphere of their wedding while remaining simple and classy. 

Untraditional Formats & Materials to Consider for Creative Wedding Invitations 

Your stationery isn’t limited to paper in an envelope. One couple I worked with sent their guests a disco ball in a box as a save-the-date! I designed a custom-printed box and a die-cut paper bow that would feature throughout their day-of stationery. We put it all together to create one of the most memorable save-the-dates I’ve ever designed. Plus, nothing says “party!” like opening a disco ball on your doorstep! 

Velvet is another unique and underutilized material for wedding stationery. I used it for a themed wedding at the Spy Museum recently! To truly embrace the spy theme, I used velvet dossiers to hold the suite together, and that velvet was carried through to other parts of the wedding stationery. If you want something textured, sexy, and cool, I am begging you to use velvet!

“Out There” Ideas to Surprise and Delight Your Guests 

Earlier, I mentioned that some of my designs are just plain weird. Well, “weird” turns into “cool” and “unforgettable” when it works. And trust me, I’m really good at making things work. One of the best examples of this is the 3-D, Ferris wheel-shaped menus I made for a wedding in Chicago. Did it require an absurd amount of testing, cutting, revising, and measuring? Yes. Was it worth it? Absolutely yes. The most challenging designs tend to be my favorites. 

I’m also looking forward to expanding my breadth of “weird” this year! I am hoping for the opportunity to make a tunnel book invitation, aka, layers of paper where designs are cut out of each layer to portray a scene. I would also love to incorporate more fabric into wedding invitations! Printing and embossing on fabric creates some of the most interesting and exciting textures.
