I am so flattered by all the Tweets, Facebook comments, emails, inquiries, etc., regarding the re-launch of Fig. 2 Design, thank you everyone!

I'm also surprised at how many people still confuse the correct spelling of stationery- the paper kind with stationary- the parked kind.  I am not being a lazy blogger, I have some posts in the works to cover all things NSS, but I felt absolutely compelled to re-post this from last year.

Remember Wordly Wise from seventh grade English class? Mrs. Eagan would be so proud to know that after all these years I am dedicating this lovely post to her.

It's painful to see stationery designers misspelling the word that best describes what they do, but it’s not just my fellow stationer’s, it happens to appear quite a bit, and I shake my head each time. So for all of you out there, still never sure, I’m going to pass along my crazy learning tip.

Stationery with an e is the paper kind. Paper has an er at the end of it, just as stationery does. Stationary with an a is the parked kind, as in your car is sitting parked at a red light. Parked has an ar just as stationary does.

After so many years of confusion, I have finally found something that will help me in never getting confused in Stationary and Stationery. All these years I have tried different ways in which I could avoid embarassment while using these words and your article has solved so much trouble for me. Really appreciate your work.

Yes. I appreciate the clarification. I, too, fall victim to this spelling snafu. I like your “parked” memory device. This will definitely help! Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for pointing this out! I run a small stationery shop on Etsy and have to tag my items both "stationery" and "stationary" because so may people search for the incorrect "ar" one! I'm delighted that you set the record straight:)

E for envelope. It's that simple.

Lol. I hate that too! That's a good way to remember it! I, for some reason, was thought. The E in stationery is for envelope! & I have to think about that ever time. Just like I have to revert back to ballet class whenever I thik about right vs. left, but that's another story...
